Abstract
The techniques of image production have undergone profound transformations across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: from the analogue image to the proliferation of synthetic images, the mass distribution of technical versions of perceptual reality, and the emergence of generative systems based on sophisticated computational processes. These shifts in the technical nature of image production have reconfigured our visual culture in ways that demand new conceptual frameworks for their understanding. Vilém Flusser's observations on technical images offer a relevant philosophical foundation from which to approach this process, although his reflections, anchored in the context of his own time, cannot be transposed to the present without mediation. Reinterpreted and critically deployed, his concepts illuminate both the transformations currently under way and emerging technical realities — in particular, those produced by generative systems that Flusser only partly anticipated.
