Abstract

Upon his return to Spain after a stay in the United States at the beginning of the 1970s, Juan Navarro Baldeweg held a series of retrospective exhibitions grouped under the name of The Vacant Room (1976), which represented an effort to systematically synthesize the interests and motivations on which he had been working during the years he spent at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The article will analyze the most relevant works that were shown in one of them, Light and Metals (1976), in which the topics that he had been exploring during his American stage were summarized, leading him to establish a series of categories
to group his work around the denomination of essential variables, which advanced the course of his professional career in the following years.
